E. C. Jordan diary, 1870-1871.

A photocopy of a diary (May 24, 1870-May 15, 1871, 199 numb. p.), kept by a Northern Pacific Railroad Company employee during the construction of its line in the area of Otter Tail County, Minnesota. From the brief entries it appears that Jordan worked on preparing estimates and reports on the progress of the construction. No details were given on the exact nature of these estimates or reports. Jordan left St. Paul (Minn.) on May 24, 1870 and arrived at his headquarters in Ottertail City on May 31, where he remained, with occasional trips to Detroit Lakes and nearby areas, until May 15, 1871. The entries give brief data on the weather, the visits of Northern Pacific officials, Jordan's visits to construction sites, holidays (Christmas, 1870), relations with members of the crew, Indian women (January 1-11, 1871), illnesses, and general activities during his employment.
